5 Days Majete, Mount Mulanje, Lake Malawi Itinerary
Day 1: Blantyre to Majete Wildlife Reserve
Your Majete, Mount Mulanje and Lake Malawi safari dventure begins by picking you up from the hotel in Blantyre or Chileka Airport and transfer to Majete Wildlife Reserve. Located in the lower Shire Valley in the South West of Malawi, Majete is a true success story of conservation. Since 2003, African Parks has taken the lead in transforming Majete into a flourishing sanctuary where wildlife populations have dramatically recovered.
As the first rays of sunlight touch the savannah, you embark on a morning game drive in Majete wildlife reserve with the anticipation of sighting the “Big Five” – lions, leopards, elephants, buffalo, and rhinos. Professional guides navigate the rugged terrain, bringing you face-to-face with these majestic creatures. The thrill of watching a pride of lions or observing the gentle giants that are elephants in their natural habitat is an experience etched in memory forever.
After a lunch break, you will continue with your adventure by embarking on a river safari in the Shire River . Here, you’re likely to spot hippos, crocodiles, and a plethora of bird species. For those preferring to stay on land, an afternoon guided nature walk unveils smaller wonders of the wild, from diverse plant life to the minutiae of the insect world. Later you will drive back for dinner and your overnight stay at Thawale Lodge.
Day 2: Majete to Mount Mulanje
Today after breakfast you will bid farewell to the wild of Majete and continue to Mount Mulanje, a hiker’s paradise and Malawi’s highest peak. Reaching Mulanje involves a scenic drive through tea plantations and rolling hills, which prepares you for the day’s adventure.
The Mulanje mountain is also known as “Island in the Sky,” offers a network of well-marked trails. Accompanied by an experienced local guide, you set out on a day trek tailored to your fitness level. As you ascend through the lush terrain, cedar trees tower above while waterfalls provide a melodious backdrop. The crisp mountain air and panoramic views from the plateau make the physical exertion worthwhile. After a day of trekking, you spend the night at Hapuwani Lodge, allowing for a full immersion in the natural splendor of Mulanje.
Day 3: Mount Mulanje to Lake Malawi
After descending from Mount Mulanje, your journey leads you to the legendary Lake Malawi, Africa’s third-largest and sixth-deepest lake in the world. Known for its crystal-clear waters and abundant fish species, particularly the colorful cichlids, Lake Malawi is a UNESCO World Heritage site.
The sandy beaches and inviting waters are perfect for relaxation and water sports. You can indulge in snorkeling to witness the vibrant underwater life or take a kayak out to explore at your own pace to experience your Malawi safari. The lake’s tranquil environment is perfect for unwinding and reflecting on the adventure thus far.

Day 4: Lake Malawi to Lilongwe
A short drive along the lake’s shoreline brings you to Cape Maclear, located within Lake Malawi National Park. The day is yours to explore this idyllic location, where mountains meet the lake, providing a stunning backdrop for your adventures.
For diving enthusiasts, the clear waters of Cape Maclear are a haven. Dive sites here teem with life and provide an unforgettable underwater experience. Alternatively, you can opt for an island-hopping trip to the nearby Thumbi West Island or enjoy a laid-back sunset cruise on a traditional dhow, savoring the changing colors of the sky as the day draws to a close. Day 5: Lilongwe’s Urban Pulse
On the final day of your safari, you head to Lilongwe, Malawi’s bustling capital the journey of about 3 to 4 hours. The Lilongwe city offers a contrasting experience to the natural settings you’ve explored. Arrive here for lunch and later transfer to the airport for your onward flight back home.
